Social Mums Star – Gemma Bray

This week we’re speaking to Gemma Bray, aka The Organised Mum who has amassed an incredible following of over 152k on Instagram. The mum of three developed a system for getting the cleaning done in half an hour a day, Monday to Friday, leaving weekends housework free.

She now makes a living from her business with sponsorship and collaborations from brands and has built an incredible community on social media with team TOMM. She talks to us about why she is loving Facebook again and shares a great social media tip for any small business owner.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?

My eldest son encouraged me to start talking about The Organised Mum Method on Instagram. At the time it was a cleaning method that I followed privately and only my friends and family knew about it. But he dared me to share it with the world and the rest (as they say) is history! Two years later I create content not just for own blog but also the brands. My book is due to be published in September this year.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

Most days are very different. I work from home so I have to be very strict with my time management. If it is a day when I am writing or developing content then I will head straight to my desk after the school run and work until lunchtime, then take a break to walk the dog and then its back to my desk until its time to collect the kids and cook dinner! If I am out at meetings then the whole schedule goes out of the window! I (of course) follow TOMM and this makes sure that everything still gets done around the house, even when my days are unpredictable.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM AND WHY?

If you would have asked me this question a couple of months ago I would definitely have said Instagram but recently I have been feeling the love for Facebook again, as it enables proper conversations to develop which I think is really important.

HOW HAS SOCIAL MEDIA HELPED YOU GROW YOUR BUSINESS?

If it wasn’t for social media then I wouldn’t have my book deal. It is an invaluable way to get your name out there and really levels the playing field. If your idea is good it allows you to reach so many people and the possibilities are limitless. It isn’t about who you know anymore!

WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER MUMS IN BUSINESS?

Stay on message. It is really easy to start posting pics of your dog but if that has nothing to do with your brand then your feed can become quickly diluted. Keep your dog pics for your personal feed. And as always content is king. Answer the questions that your customers and demographic will be searching for online.
