Our Social Mum of the week is tea shop owner Jennie who is a member of our Social Mums Leicester Facebook group. She shares with us how social media helps her get more people through the door and why original photography is good.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY

Hi my name is Jennie sleigh. I have 5 children. We also have a dog, a rabbit and a tortoise!

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS?

I own Alma’s vintage sandwich and cake shop in Coalville. We are well known for our cheesecakes and haystacks. We also offer outside catering for meetings and parties.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?

I worked at Almas prior to owning it. I took it on as I love the job. I love that the majority of our food is handmade. I also love the social aspect of the job.

WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS DO YOU USE AND WHY?

I use Facebook mostly as this has had the biggest effect on the business. I have noticed that if I post 2-3 times a day we are busier. I have just started using Instagram as I am told this will attract the younger customer as they prefer Instagram. We don’t have too many followers yet so I need to work at advertising that.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

The hardest thing is knowing when to post and if I am reaching the people I need it too. I try posting at different times to see if that helps.

WHAT IS THE BEST SOCIAL MEDIA TIP YOU HAVE PICKED UP FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

The best tip I’ve found is to post first thing in the morning. If I post about an offer we tend to have more people through the door. People have also commented that they like the fact that we use our actual photographs of food rather then google images. They will comment that the food looks exactly like the photos.

WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND MOST USEFUL ABOUT BEING PART OF A SOCIAL MUMS FACEBOOK GROUP?

I have found local businesses that I didn’t know about prior to to joining the Social Mums  group, so I am also hoping that the same is happening for us at Alma’s.
